Susan McGehee

"My purpose is to use late-twentieth-century materials, primarily from the electronics industry, to create pieces that have the look and feel of previous centuries."

Susan McGehee is a weaver who has abandoned the limp web of fiber for a more durable medium: copper-coated wire and metal. Incorporating traditional weaving techniques and patterns, she uses a computerized sixteen-harness dobby loom to weave lightweight pieces that seem to float on the wall or in space. These unique pieces are easy to maintain with dusting or vacuuming.

McGehee's work includes sculptural wire kimonos that are created from bronze or aluminum screening, which are then embellished with electronic odds and ends, residual scraps of wire left over from weavings, and an eclectic variety of found treasures.
