Mountain Melody

A stunning and complex work of art, this woodcut print was inspired by an oil painting Hays completed in 2003. Reworking the piece in pencil, he changed the time of day to night and added a gibbous moon to the composition as a source of light. By selectively wiping the block each time a color was printed, Hays was able to create the effect of luminous fog in the valleys. This time-consuming process results in each print being unique since he could not wipe the block in the same way for each subsequent print.
