Looking into the Deep
Wood Wall Sculpture
Created by

Part of the Topography Series, this wall sculpture suggest the way light refracts as it passes through water or mist. A contemporary approach to mosaic, it is made from weathered pieces of wood that carry the story of the wind, sun, and frost. As with all the works in the Topography Series, this is an exploration of human perception, and our relationship with the physical world. Pattern recognition is the cognitive process that we humans perform so well. Many times this ability results in great creative and innovative understanding, but sometimes we are seeing what is not there. Looking into the Deep is about the tension between seeing what is really there and what our minds let us see.
