Sculptural Form Turned from Red Mallee Burl Cap
Created by Eric Reeves
This sculptural form is turned from a superb Red Mallee Burl cap, the top of the burl. A species of Eucalyptus from Australia, Red Mallee burl is an extremely dense and hard wood, but has fantastic color and figure. This particular burl cap was described by Reeves' primary wood dealer as extra fine. The amazing texture of the burl surface is kept, and the natural edges provide an extraordinary contrast with the perfectly turned concave at the the center of the turning. The vivid red color is especially dramatic in this example of a Red Mallee burl woodturning. The flanges created by the symmetry of the central concave fold slightly downward.
