Buckeye Burl Turned Sculptural Form

Wood Sculpture

Created by Eric Reeves
This sculptural form has been turned from a superb and wonderfully irregular piece of buckeye burl with live edges and bark inclusions incorporated into the design. The inky, dark, mesmerizing figure of buckeye burl comes to life only when this root burl reaches the atmosphere and rapidly oxidizes into the pattern seen here.

Buckeye has always seemed to the artist to have an otherworldly quality, as if a material from a different universe of wood. It is an ideal turning wood, although it is becoming increasingly difficult to find in large sizes. The wood here comes from Oregon. Completing the turning requires a great deal of hand sanding in places that cannot be reached while the lathe is moving.
