Dwell Series No.5
Created by Ted Lott
Items in the artist's "Dwell Series" are functional works build in, on, and around high-quality vintage and repurposed items. In the case of "Dwell No.5," this item is a lovely walnut ottoman, with beautiful curves and a rich patina. The curves of this fully functional, sculptural cabinet build up from the original form, to create a stunning symphony. The work is constructed from solid hardwood using the system of miniaturized framing developed by the artist. Each individual board has been hand milled on the band saw from rough-sawn lumber, hand sanded, cut, and installed. A hand rubbed oil finish lends both patina and protection. In addition, each interior shelf is lit internally by a small incandescent bulb, operated by a solid metal toggle switch, subtly located on the base of the cabinet. A cloth wrapped cord provides the juice to make it glow. Each window is trimmed by hand, and the roof line, inspired by Italianate architecture, provides a fitting cap to this one-of-a-kind cabinet.
