Corallium 10

Oil Painting

Created by Virginia Bradley
Striving to call attention to gravely endangered coral reefs, the "Corallium Series"? is influenced by the reefs in Playa Santa, Puerto Rico. Using oil paint on archival film, the artist allows the sun and saltwater to act as alchemical agents as they interact with the paint, creating the unique patterns found throughout the series.

When she first started to go to Playa Santa over fifteen years ago, the coral reefs in the bay were almost completely dead. Today, they are thriving and have had a resurgence due to a 2011 infrastructure project that stopped wastewater from being dumped into the bay. There are many projects throughout the world giving renewal and life to coral reefs.
