Keeper of the Oars

Mixed-Media Wall Sculpture

Created by Charissa Brock
Each of us has an oar in the river of life, paddling towards a destination. There is no end to the river, no beginning. Yet at some point each of us must lay down our paddle. There is a place for our paddling to be honored in the hearts of all the people. The last two years the artist has thought deeply, as we all have, about life, death, and the space in between. In her own way, this piece honors those who have had to lay down their paddle.

The bamboo in this piece was hand gathered in Oregon and taken through several steps to turn it into bamboo strips, which are heat bent, sanded, and stitched together. The white paddles are made from layers of mulberry paper, hand cut and gold leafed. This piece weighs 32 lbs and has a wire hanger on the back. Signature is on front bottom of piece on white background.
