Earth and Fire: Sage S Triptych

Mixed-Media Wall Hanging

Created by Kara Young
These pieces are made of 85% abaca fiber handmade paper. When dry, they are painted with gesso on all sides to seal the paper. Fired and patined copper is adhered to the paper and a cement mixture is spread on the bottom two-thirds of the piece, below the metal to form the cracked surface. After the cement dries it is carefully sanded. The cement is then sponge painted with layers of rust and golden stain and the top third of the cement is stained with a thin wash of black paint. Encaustic is worked over the cement to create a deep rich cracked surface. The top third is troweled and texture with joint compound, sanded and sponge painted three times with a variety of rust and golden colors.

The use of handmade paper for the canvas of the piece gives an organic feel to the piece and the added benefit is that the work very light for hanging. This set weighs about nine pounds in total.

The pieces are wired and hung without a frame. Shown on a black background. Each is unique and will vary slightly from that shown.
