Canyon Walls: Talking Sticks

These pieces are made of 90 % abaca fiber handmade paper. When the pieces have dried, they are painted with gesso on all sides to seal the paper. The fired and patined copper is burned in a wood burning stove, and then adhered to the paper. A cement mixture is spread on the designated areas. Each area is then taped for each added layer of texture and color. All textured surfaces are sanded, stained and layered with encaustic. The artist creates each piece to have its own unique arrangement of patterns, colors, cracks and metals to create balance across the set of four sticks.

The use of handmade paper for the canvas provides an organic feel and keeps the work light for hanging. Each panel weighs about 2lbs.
