Emilia Van Nest Markovich

"I draw inspiration for my work from nature and the surrounding environment. In my work I explore the connections between nature and memory through the use of color, line, shape, and pattern."

Emilia Van Nest Markovich creates collage drawings that reference the natural world. Her images are abstracted and reconfigured to create narratives about time and place. Through her use of layered color, bold patterning, and unique symbols, she creates work that is rich in visual meaning.

Emilia Van Nest Markovich draws with chalk pastel on black paper, working in layers to create rich texture and surface color. These drawings are then cut up and juxtaposed with drawings in gold leaf to create the final collaged work.

Emilia Van Nest Markovich studied at Alfred University and then received a BFA in painting from the University of New Mexico. After moving to Denver, Colorado, she obtained an MA degree from the University of Northern Colorado. She currently maintains a studio in Denver.
