Sharon Brush

"I approach the construction of each of my vessels as a sculpture, working to create rhythm, flow, reverberation, and quiet within each one. "

Sharon Brush's work has a unique, timeless quality. Her pieces evoke a sense of other eras and cultures while at the same time remaining undeniably contemporary. Her many influences include primitive architecture, musical instruments, handmade tools, and formations found in the natural world.

Brush's pieces are hand built with stoneware clay using pinch, coil, and slab construction methods. After construction, they are sanded smooth, sprayed with layers of slip, oxides, and terra sigillata, burnished, and fired in a 2200-degree kiln. It is the layering of the slips and oxides that gives the surface of the work such richness and depth.

Brush received a BFA in ceramics from the State University of New York at New Paltz and an MFA in ceramics from Rhode Island School of Design. After receiving her MFA, she was awarded a one-year artist residency from the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana. She has been a ceramic artist for over 30 years.
