Berit Hines

"I approach the composition of my work with spontaneity and immediacy, discovering the form during the process of making it and listening to what my hands want to make. My work continues to explore form, using surface decoration and texture as integral parts of each piece."

Berit Hines creates series of one-of-a-kind sculptural vessels in stoneware using various ceramic techniques. She is inspired by the natural world. Her visual and tactile vocabulary derives from the minimalist traditions of her European background. She wants her work to evoke an emotional and sensory response, and she pursues this through her choice of form as well as the refinement of her work's surface qualities.

Hines has refined the ancient techniques of pinching and coiling clay over many years of patient practice. She works on several pieces at the same time, rotating them as needed. No two are alike, but they relate to each other in a natural manner. Creating is a communicative process for her—pieces tell her what to do in terms of color and surface treatment. Surprises are gifts of this process.

Hines received her BFA in ceramics from the Royal Academy of Art and Design in Den Bosch, the Netherlands. She worked as a full-time studio potter from 1987 to 1997 with regular exhibitions in the Netherlands and Germany. After immigrating to the USA and a 22-year hiatus, she is now happy to be part of the vibrant art communities of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Madison, Wisconsin, where she spends her winters and summers.
