Jeweled Red Vase
Created by Lisa Scroggins
This vase is created on the wheel using white earthenware clay. After trimming the base and smoothing the vessel, holes are pierced around the rim of the vase and the piece is bisque fired at cone 04. Once cooled, five layers of bright, rich red underglaze are evenly brushed on and small turquoise triangles are painted over the background. A sharp, thin, black underglaze line is painted either side of the red to frame the color. Signed by the artist on the bottom. Finished with three layers of a clear gloss covering glaze painted inside and out. The vase is glaze fired to cone 05. Once cooled, turquoise glass beads from Murano, Italy, along with small red glass beads and creamy white freshwater pearls are threaded through the piercings along the rim of the vase in an alternating patterns using thin, silver wire. This is a beautiful statement piece but is also functional and can hold water and flowers. Each piece is unique and slight variations in composition, dimensions, and colors may occur.
