Beliza Blues Coastal Collage Swirling Astray Vessel

Ceramic Vase

Created by Judi Tavill
This one of a kind glossy blues coastal inspired undulating astray roundish vessel is both decorative and functional. It is inspired by the various patterns textures and movement discovered along the shore during Tavill's seaside travels. Its coral-like textures are handmade through a series of creative processes in the artist's ceramic studio. The artist throws sandy stoneware clay on the pottery wheel, alters the form and later carves and designs the pattern. The artist has hand textured the surface with various tools. Various shades of underglazes are added to create a montage of blues and ivory hues on the surface and her signature "JT" stamp is impressed into the recessed textured foot upon completion during the greenware stage. The foot bottom is left unglazed. The piece is substantial in weight due to the necessity for thickness to achieve such texture. The first firing secures the carving and texture and then Tavill coats the interior and exterior with a glossy glaze(though some portions remain more matte) that is applied before the final firing. The final firing takes the kiln to over 2185 degrees as the clay is fully vitrified, no longer porous.

This piece is wonderful in a coastal, organic, transitional or modern home. It is great as a gift or simply as an addition to an eclectic collection.
