Melissa Misoda

"I am inspired most by my medium, hot glass. The motion, fluidity, and magic that comes from working with molten hot glass has inspired my work."

In her work, Melissa Misoda strives to capture the process of flowing hot glass in a single moment. This has been an idea that has both challenged and inspired her work for many years. Her desire to create motion in an otherwise motionless object has led her to further explore new color techniques in glass.

Melissa Misoda uses a special color blending technique to add dimension and motion to her vessels. She starts with several pieces of colored glass rod, heating and blending them together to create a seamless fade from one color to another. After her final gather of glass, she adds bits of glass that create a dripping effect that resembles hot glass.

Melissa Misoda owns Misoda Glassblowing Studio in Seattle with her husband, Andy. She received a BFA in glass and education from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and an MFA from Alfred University in New York. She has been teaching glassblowing at Sammamish High School in Bellevue, WA since 1999. Her work has been published in the New Glass Review as well as "500 Glass Objects" by Lark Publishing.
