Bow with Girl

Art Glass Sculpture

Created by Susan Bloch
"Bow with Girl" is carved into a half inch piece of float glass. The motivation behind the piece was the innocence of childhood. She is carved using a sandblaster and silica-carbide abrasive in a labor-intensive process which removes the glass by slowly abrading it. It is carved deeply from the back and shows the girl in relief from the front. The art glass looks beautiful from the front and the back. It begins with a drawing on paper, is transferred onto a rubber resist on the glass. The resist is hand-cut with an exacto knife and removed piece by piece as it is worked. The resist is removed early in the process and continued freehand to create the smooth flow of the features. The process continues until the piece is finished by controlling the volume of air and amount of abrasive.

Dust the piece with a lint-free cloth or feather duster. Care should be taken to keep fingers off the back of the piece and to keep hands clean. Remove fingerprints by spraying glass cleaner onto a soft clean cloth, then clean the glass. Use a mild dishwasher soap if necessary and dry the piece after washing. Protect the glass art while washing by putting a foam pad in the sink.
