Steve Uren

Studio of Steve Uren

"My artwork is a manifestation of my love of unique, quality pieces that combine function and style. I aim to create artwork that will allow my customers to inject beauty and fun into everyday, useful items in their lives."

From a young age, Steve Uren wandered the woods of Upper Michigan with his grandfather, identifying leaves and needles, learning about burls and bark. Those pristine and untouched forests led to a love of wood—the smell, feel, look, and individuality of each tree. Each piece of wood has a personality that Uren encourages to shine through in his artwork.

In a small studio in Upper Michigan, Steve Uren creates his artwork one piece at a time, starting with an inspirational piece of wood that is purchased from a sustainable forester. He uses no stains or dyes; instead, he allows the natural beauty and colors of highly figured woods to showcase themselves. He has developed a trademark drawer joint and a well-known intersecting line and dot design.

Steve Uren is entirely self-taught, although he spent many years observing his grandfather, learning about techniques and reverence for wood from this mentor. Over the years, Uren has spent time with many other woodworkers and has expanded his knowledge of artwork through personal reading. Countless hours in the studio and many years of experimentation have served him well.
