Jonathan White

Odd Inq

"I see beauty in both natural and industrial objects. A steel mill furnace being reclaimed by rust is as pleasing to me as the first fiddleheads of spring pushing from the ground."

White creates objects inspired by nature and industry. Drawing from the Arts and Crafts philosophy that nature informs good design, White sees the sculptural beauty in industrial structures, and the graceful architecture found in nature. White's sculptural vessels and structures are built to inspire contemplation and touch.

White works with both earthenware clay and porcelain. Most of his works are hand built with slabs of clay. The surfaces are textured with slips and glaze-fired multiple times. His illuminated porcelain structures are built as porcelain frameworks which are then covered with thin sheets of porcelain. Some of the porcelain work is fired unglazed.

White studied ceramics at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has worked as a professional ceramic artist since 1995.
