Margaret Griffith

"Becoming one's own artist is an ongoing challenge. Whether working on a dog portrait, a landscape, or a still life, I always strive to communicate an inner emotion. There should always be a strong connection linking the work to the artist to the audience. "

Griffith's work is often highly influenced by her time in Maine. The rhythm of nature is an important factor to the artist, and it may be observed in the architectural elements of her boats, her houses, or even in her buoys. It is also felt in her energetic brushwork portraying rocks, water, and sky. Shapes and color seem to always dominate her work, allowing for strong compositions.

Oil is Griffith's primary medium, and she paints on both birch wood panels and linen canvas. Griffith spends her summers painting many plain air studies. In the winter, when she is not in Maine, these studies and her many photographs serve as references for paintings.

Griffith graduated with a degree in studio art from Sweet Briar College. She spent time in New York during the '80s working in the art world and has attended workshops with Ray Roberts, Ron Rencher, Colin Page, Ann Blair Brown, and most recently, with Mitchell Johnson. She studies the work of Fairfield Porter, Alex Katz, Lois Dodd, and Diebenkorn, to name just a few.
