Lynn Karlin

"My move to a Maine farm in 1983 gave me a new appreciation and respect for the seasonal food we grow. More recently, I began a quest to honor even the humblest vegetables by elevating them to the place where they belong: on a pedestal. The images in the "Pedestal," "Still Life," and "Tray" series celebrate the beauty of the harvest and capture the unique character of often-overlooked plants."

Food. We taste (rather, we eat), we touch (maybe not enough), but how often do we slow down to take in the aroma and the beauty of the often-overlooked vegetables, fruit, and edible plants that nourish us? Lynn Karlin encourages us to slow down and take a closer look at the plants we often take for granted on a daily basis. Her photography calls attention to what sustains us and our families.

Karlin uses only the soft, directional natural light in her studio, which gives her work a painterly feel reminiscent of 17th-century master painters. When shooting and styling, she thinks design, form, light, and negative space as she searches for the composition and props that bring out the character of her subjects.

A graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, Lynn Karlin was the first woman staff photographer for Women's Wear Daily in 1975. She went on to photograph for major publications before moving to a Maine farm where she found her passion photographing the food she grew. Her award-winning fine-art photographs appear in galleries and private collections and have been exhibited in the USA and Europe.
