Gail Powell

"I seek to capture and convey in my work the emotions I felt when my subject first inspired me."

Gail Powell uses her paintbrushes and canvas to transport the viewer to another time and place. Landscapes are her favorite subject, and oils are her favorite medium. With oils, she can layer and change and build up textures. The interplay of color excites her.

She paints on the rough side of masonite that has been sanded and gessoed white. Mounting the masonite on 2" x 1" pine strips, she continues the painting onto the mounting. These mounted works are not framed, so the painting sets off the wall. Viewed from the side, the landscape can still be seen.

Powell begins each piece with a simple outline and then adds color and texture to develop the scene's detail and vibrancy. Her goal is always to convey to the viewer the same sense of awe that inspired her originally.
