Dorothy Bassett

"In porcelain I have found the perfect medium with which to explore the endless possibilities of form and color found in nature."

As a nature enthusiast and avid gardener, Dorothy takes her inspiration from the natural world. In fact, many of the flora and fauna that inhabit her porcelain creations can be observed in her own garden. The pieces she creates are both functional and organic in form, graceful and striking in color. Dorothy's unique designs bring the life and beauty of nature into the home.

Dorothy uses high-fired porcelain to create her functional art. Each piece is individually hand built or wheel thrown, sometimes carved, and embellished with hand-crafted bas relief clay appliques. Each applique is painstakingly hand coated with carefully blended colored glazes to create a stained-glass or watercolor effect.

Dorothy holds BA, MA, and MFA degrees. She taught art at Piedmont Virginia Community College, where she founded the ceramics department. After relocating to Austin, Texas, she co-owned a successful pottery business for over twenty years. Dorothy is now focused on her solo creations of finely crafted porcelain in her home studio. Her work can be found in private collections throughout the world.
